The Village Garden

This is a report from mid-winter 2008:

Here's an outline of the status and planned development for the garden.

Currently we have a large area (approximately 100+ square meters) for growing food. Here we have many different vegetables and herbs growing, including (to name a few) - beetroot, snow peas, cabbage, carrot, broccoli, lettuce, mustard, spinach, potatoes, tomatoes, capsicum, rocket, broad beans, sweet peas... We have many herbs going well too - basil, coriander, mint, brahmi, dill, parsley, sage, oregano, cat-mint. We also have some fruit - passion fruit, a lemon tree and an avocado tree (these are still small and in early years).
For this area, there are plans to add a few more fruits trees (mandarin, peach, pear... are some possible ideas). We also are developing some easy-access paths throughout the garden and finishing off the final extensions to the vegetable/herb section. A lotus pond is also in development.
The other area of the garden is planned to be a sitting area. We have started an Australian Wild Flower bed that should be blooming abundantly late spring. We also have set up a campfire circle with logs to sit around it.
Soon we will bring an outdoor table and benches there to sit around and have some out-door vegetarian BBQ's (when it warms up).

We need to mainly do the following:
- Acquire a chainsaw and cut the remaining trunks of the old pine trees down, and also use it to cut up some other wood from the trees.
- Remove the old hills-hoist clothes line and put the second new clothesline up.
- Bring the outdoor table and chairs from Emeera's parents house and apply varnish or paint to protect them from weathering.
- Sort the pine cuttings into big logs and small branches (with a saw, ax or chainsaw)
- Continue making the paths and decide what we will place over them (gravel, quartz, bricks, stones,,,)
- Finish the final expansion of the food garden
- Plant some more fruit trees
- Finish the pond, acquire some lotus seeds and other rocks or plants for this area. (I plan to make this into a mandala type structure) - there has also been talk of getting some 'auspicious' fish. I had an idea to buy some white flowers to place on the 'petals' around the pond, then surround that with river pebbles in a circular shape.

After this, we can work on the sitting area more, planted some other trees and a lavender/rosemary hedge or similar. Possibly mostly in Oriental/Native Australian style. We then have further plans to build our own gazebo.

Hopefully this gives a vision of what we are going to do. Photos can be included here to show visually the history and development of the First Village Garden.

Oh and a statue of Venus or perhaps Sarasvati (she is clothed), would be great.

Todd.

Re: The Village Garden

I've compiled the previous posts into this one post, giving a little historical record of our garden, after pruning the posts a little.

WINTER 2008

If anyone enjoys gardening and getting closer to the Earth, and would like to assist in the development of our garden, let me know.

SPRING 2008

Here are some updates on the Village Garden.
We now have 10 fruit trees, some tiny, some bigger. The list includes; 2 Avocado, 2 Apple, 1 Mandarin, 1 Peach, 1 Feijoa, 1 Black Current, 1 Nectarine (we think), and 1 Lemon. An Orchard in time.
Shade-cloth is also up to protect the garden during the intense summer Sun.
The area is taking shape and developing steadily.

SUMMER 2009

It has been a couple of months since the last post here, and things have been growing more, so it's time to update this garden journal of the first chapter of the Village.
It is now just after the summer solstice, so it is hot and sunny most days, rain is sparse, though we had a good amount a couple of weeks ago which the land really loved!

SPRING 2009

The garden is coming slowly out of the weed season, as it was left to go fallow over most of winter, to give Mother Earth a break (at least in our backyard)

Now we are slowly clearing the weeds and re-sowing a range of seeds. The Plan is to gradually clean up the whole area.

We have many snow peas coming and corn, tomato and others are on their way.

Other things that have been around a while are still going strong such as Spinach and Potatoes, Cabbage, Mint etc. etc.

The fruit trees are just bursting to bloom with the coming of spring, and the flowers are out.

A few native trees and shrubs have survived the winter and coming out again with their leaves.

The garden will no doubt be vibrant in the coming months, so we will have to make use of the outdoors for Spring time 'picnics' and activities.

We are seeking more variety of vegetables to plant, and are happy to exchange with others who are into natural gardening.

Re: The Village Garden

LATE SPRING 2009

And now for an update on the garden.

We have included a nice lawn edging to separate the lawn from the garden beds, to keep out the weeds and make mowing the lawn easier.
We are still working to keep the weeds back, and slowly we gain ground.
We had a heap of peas, some beans, potatoes and many herbs, though there has been little focus on the garden of late, yet the tide is likely changing.
We have some corn growing nicely, and some tiny broccoli shoots were seen the other day.
The fruit trees are going well.
We now have cleared some extra ground to make fertile with manure, compost and straw and sow some seeds.
If all goes well, there will be a nice harvest over summer. The care we give to the garden will likely determine this.
